Coconut oil has "undeserved health halo," dietitian says
A controversial lecture on nutrition calls into question the health claims for coconot oil. A Harvard adjunct professor called the oil "pure poison." Coconut oil's superfood status was challenged last year when the American Heart Association recommended limited use of the saturated fat. Samantha Heller, a registered dietitian at NYU Langone Health, joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss how the oil, like butter and lard, can raise your levels of bad cholesterol.

Coconut oil, with its tropical aroma and smooth texture, has become a popular pantry staple. But can it truly be considered a "healthy" cooking oil? Let's dive into the science and savor the details.
**Cooking with Coconut Oil: Pros and Cons**
**Pros:**
* **High Smoke Point:** Compared to other oils, coconut oil boasts a high smoke point (around 350°F), making it suitable for high-heat cooking like stir-frying and sauteing.
* **Unique Flavor:** It adds a subtle sweetness and coconutty aroma to dishes, complementing Asian and Caribbean cuisine.
* **Potential Health Benefits:** Some studies suggest coconut oil may have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, though more research is needed.
**Cons:**
* **High in Saturated Fat:** Coconut oil is nearly 90% saturated fat, which can raise "bad" LDL cholesterol if consumed in excess. The American Heart Association recommends limiting saturated fat intake to 5-6% of daily calories.
* **Unrefined Oil Concerns:** Unrefined coconut oil may contain impurities and potentially harmful compounds. Opt for refined coconut oil for cooking.
* **Not a Magic Bullet:** While some potential benefits exist, it's important to maintain a balanced diet and not rely solely on coconut oil for health gains.
**So, can you use coconut oil for food?**
**The answer is yes, but with moderation and awareness.** Here are some key points to remember:
* **Enjoy it in small amounts:** Don't make it your go-to cooking oil. Opt for heart-healthy options like olive oil or avocado oil for most of your cooking needs.
* **Choose wisely:** Select refined coconut oil for cooking and avoid excessive consumption of unrefined varieties.
* **Consider alternatives:** Explore other healthy cooking oils with different flavor profiles and nutritional benefits.
**Remember:** A balanced diet includes a variety of healthy fats from different sources. Coconut oil can be a flavorful addition to your culinary repertoire, but use it thoughtfully and prioritize overall dietary balance.
**Bonus:**
* Explore recipes that use coconut oil sparingly to add a unique touch without compromising health.
* Discover the benefits and drawbacks of other popular cooking oils to make informed choices.
* Learn more about healthy fat sources and how to incorporate them into your diet for optimal well-being.
